I did that for about a year working in cosmetics at a department store. Hated it. I'd much rather not have to deal with sales. It's really hard to get a job as an actual make-up artist.

This may not be an option, but have you ever thought of working at a Glamour Shots? Or, more importantly, do they still employ makeup artists?
I was a photographer there many years ago. Just a thought.
