Picture advice
I'm thinking I want to be a photographer so, I just wanted to know what you guys thought of a couple pictures I took. They were too big to attach so I had to give a link through that website. I thought the car one was kinda neat except you can see me in the tail light. Any advice or comments are appreciated. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/...+age_scale%3A5 http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/48296503/

Get closer to your subject. Both kind of look like snapshots. Get as close to the tail-light as possible to pick up the texture and detail within the light.

Yeah, I sort of agree with Brad. They seem like very plain shots with no real artistic potential, except for maybe the second one. It's hard to give feedback in photography. You just kind of have to know what to shoot, and at what angle, and cropping is also helpful at times.

I like the 1st. It can be a beginning for a small "photo gallery" (I don't know better name of it in eng) about, for example, dog- ...(Gooood, I don't know the word again! It's a place or a company which is specialized on dogs of one breed (or several breeds, it depends). For example- greyhounds, airdale terriers and so on. Do you understand what I mean?). Or may b it's a place where dogs who don't have a master live, it doesn't matter.
SO: now, after this shot you should get closer and take some photos of dog's life there and people who work there. May be there will be a man who wants to take one of the dogs home (does he look happy, does the dog like it's new master?), or there are some puppies playing- you can show how cute they are, how different they are. Imagine that you are a documental film director, tell us about everything that, you think, is interesting there. Your shots must be different- far from the object, a bit closer, close-ups, details and so on. It looks like a storyboard for a film. I know it's also a good thing to do if you want to be a film director. But if you wish this photo to be THE ONE, without a long story, you should think about what you want to show us and to tell us. For ex.- how they look at people, how they communicate, play. Or how beautiful they are- so you can shoot their eyes or faces (is this the right word?), to see the hair, make a portrait of the one or the all dogs- what do you think, do THEY think about? Try to tell it in your photo. Good luck! Sorry for a long message |

Great hair!!! It's good, because we see the dog's mood. It really will be great to see the nose too (or it's eyes a bit closer), but within it's already very nice. Is it your dog? I'm very fond of dogs)) By the way- you asked if I meant the dog pound- I really don't know what I meant. That sense of the word "pound"- is not THAT thing. But I'll ask my friends who are specialists in dogs, they will tell me for sure. I'll tell you))) Oh, I've just read- It's YOUR dog. I know the breed in russian- how it is in eng? |

Much better. Could be even closer though. That would let us see the nuances in the texture of her fur.

I'll try to but she's hard to keep still for more than a second.
:edit: I managed to get her staying still. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/49112990/

You mean Elsie's photo? No, it's ok! May be the catchlight on her right eye is a bit brighter than it should be... But the rest- hair, the shape of her snout are worked very very well with the light.

That one's a lot better. Maybe it's the old portrait photographer in me, but a subject is much more engaging (be it human or animal) when looking toward the camera. My only other suggestion would be to open your aperture as much as possible and play with depth of field.
