Over-Rated Musicians, Under-rated

My own thread inspired me to do this one also.

Over-rated:Instead of saying everything on mtv I will list actual musicians.

Rooney
Incubus
Further Seems Forever-They have a strong following.....why?
Slipknot-no shit

Under-rated:
The Mars Volta-At the drive in gets all the Credit
Sparta-Same case as Mars Volta
Built to spill-Hardly anyone I have met knows who they are
Hella-Badass band....enough said
Ozma-People call them a Weezer rip off but there new stuff is as good as when Weezer early days from 1994-1997.

Just about any 50's & 60's music. I'm not really hip to anything else.

Depends on your point of view and taste, but I think a lot of people now underrate Hanson. They were good, and talented.
Over-rated I'd say Hilary Duff. Catchy songs, but her stuff is so yesterday (sorry, I had to say that).

I'd agree with Hanson. I was young and immature back then, and I got caught up with the Hanson crowd. I actually still own "that" album.

O yes dashboard. I agree. I would say Modest Mouse but that damn song is played non stop on the radio. I liked there stuff from like 7 years ago and this cd comes out and everyone loves them. I dont think they're under-rated. At least anymore. Plus they have always had a strong following. If they didn't they wouldn't have lasted. If I went by what deserved to be on tv Id have about 700 bands on the under-rated list, and about as much for over-rated. 50-cent, Hillary Duff, etc. That isn't music thats poison.

To be honest, to be overrated in my opinion does not lessen my respect for them. Simply that their music is not awe-inspiring or revolutionary as those who are underrated. Indeed, I am a fan for most of the groups and singers on both lists. The idea is that most people I hear, when they refer to music, know more about the overrated groups than the underrated.

Jet-a description by the eloquent biys of Frenzal, "a song that is catchy and awesome the first time, and is hideously annoying the second, third, fourth times you hear it." That describes "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" PERFECTLY.

Sorry, but Incubus isn't a pop rock band that "just emerged". They've been on the scene for at least 8 years now. And it's Hoobstank that sounds like/is ripping off Incubus, not the other way around. Just had to clear that up.

Over-rated bands/artists:

Blink-182 (I actually liked them back in the day, around the time of Cheshire Cat. But now? Please.)

The Pixies are under-rated??? They sell out arenas for 60 bucks a ticket. At least they did in Atlanta for a show thats coming up. Sold out in less than a hour. You cant get much bigger than that. My brother tried to buy tickets to taht Atlanta show.

A couple more if I have anything to do with it. I was thinking about doing a "over-rated quotes & under-rated quotes." I just thought of it last night, but I won't post it for a while.

I started the over-rated thread on the actors. So if anything I have the right to do it. We could always do cars.

I thought over-rated cds would be the last one if someone makes it in a few days. Since it relates to this like the movie/actor ones.

Nirvana is over-rated. They are remembered this much because of Kurts leaving.....I stick to Courtney Love killing him! I saw something that a homeless guy was told she tried to pay him off to kill him. But yeah they're over rated. So is Jimi Hendrix. Primus is under-rated and Daft punk is also.

I beg to differ. Little Wing, Hey Joe, All Along the Watchtower, he put out some great stuff.

I never said I didn't like his stuff. I think Hey Joe was a cover wasn't it? O well anyway, he is said to be the best guitar player ever. I dont think he is, I thought Stevie Ray Vaughn was better. But yeah, he had a few good songs, Fire wasn't bad.

Meh...you all make me sick...only DR's post is any good, as he likes the bands he thinks are over-rated...the rest of you have let me down...shame on you

Then again, I have UBER-broad musical tastes...so I like a LOT of things so I reckon this entire thread will annoy me.

I don't really think there are any over-rated or under-rated bands. Simply because the fact you dislike them does not make them over-rated (see DR's point)...it's critical acclaim that does that and to be fair, music critics are usually spot on...they're quick to diss even records that do well, and quick to boost the case for records that don't do well...

Also, unlike film awards, music awards are disregarded generally as a pile of shit. Furthermore critics and lovers of music alike differ SO radically, unlike films. As such I'm unconvinced this thread works...but meh...have fun with it.
