especially when your information is erroneous.
Around the time period that POTC is set... commodore was not an actual rank. It was a title given to captains assigned squadron command. So "Captain Dude" is technically correct. (interestingly... the uniform he wears in the original POTC, is that of a rear-admiral, which would make him Commodore First Class)

And...when that scene was going on, Norrington didn't hold rank in the English Navy at all, if I remember correctly. He was simply a smelly pirate, looking out for his best interests.
