Make Firefox Much Faster
For those of you on broadband using Firefox (and if you're not, you should be shot), here's a trick to make it perform MUCH MUCH faster and load pages in an eyeblink. Impressive.
1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries: network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading. 2. Alter the entries as follows: Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true" Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 5. This means it will make 5 requests at once. 3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now! |

And for those cretins who are still typing with just their index fingers and think CPU is about giving the kiss of life to floppy drives (...), here is a piece of software to do it automatically for you.
click here if you are marginally retarded

I have been doing it the hard way for months now, and it is easy, but could be really confusing to unexperienced users. That download is really useful thanks!

Does it screw up with IE on? I put it on the PC downstairs a couple months ago(an old '98 Compaq) which had IE 5 on it. 2 weeks later, the machine went to sleep indefiniately, so I had to toss it. Now I'm skeptical about putting it on mine, which runs IE all the time.
Dosen't really bother me if I don't use Firefox-broadband is fast enough, and with Service Pack 2, all pop-ups are now blocked.

Because, I think he means, you use IE when you should use Firefox. There's IE on this machine, because I share it with people who will insist on using IE, but I personally use Firefox, I've made the changes (manually) and thanks Barrington for the tips, it's working like a charm.

Ok, Ok, I downloaded the thing, HAPPY?!
works like a charm, and I like the fact that you can use both IE and FF at the same time.

No its bloody slow compared to Internet Explorer on most sites. Its slightly better now, but I think speed wise IE is still faster for me. Using Firefox still because I'm paranoid and like tabbed browsing.
