Igby Goes Down
Burr Steers created such a wonderful movie, and I've got to say that I really enjoyed it. Who knew Kieran Culkin could do such a fine job as Igby? He's definitely come a long way from Father of the Bride and She's All That.
I'll admit the movie to start slowly and awkwardly, but it quickly grabs you and interests the audience in there dysfunctional family. Surely I'm not the only one? My next objective: The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys.

I hated this movie. More cardboard cut-outs wandering around the screen, none of them believable or interesting in any way. Self-indulgent tripe. Another example of how Americans have forgotten how to make good films.

I wasn't too impressed with Ryan Philippe's performance though. I felt he hardly ever did much through-out the movie. By that I mean, he kept the same tone, in almost every scene he was in... it's weird and it bothered me. Perhaps I only liked the movie because of Igby? That's not a very good reason, isn't it?

Since Rider commented on the characters and I didn't, I decided to. This wasn't a five-star movie, I admit that, and I did notice some flaws. Hence, my second response about Ryan's performance. My opinion of the film hasn't changed, Jacoby. I hardly contridict myself, especially with a movie, because I'm pretty concrete on what I say. It still all comes down that I liked it, and Rider didn't. Actually, all this was probably my fault. I was very brief on what I thought about it... and I didn't think it would have mattered. May I ask what part of my post did you notice the sudden change? Your brother is crying, Jake. Tell me you still love me.

It was very similar to Garden State in that respect. Because the director so desperately wants to appeal to Generation Y, all a character has to be in a film is cool and quirky. Then you've got a real character. But, of course, it's phony. I Heart Huckabees has the same exact problem (except, unlike Igby and Garden State, Huckabees is actually funny on occasion), as do most of the so-called indie films of today. We have Tarantino to thank for that. But to each his own, I suppose.
