Shooting at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva (Talmud studies school) in Jerusalem.

This is like the combined shooting of a highschool and a church full of members on Easter:

the gunman fired round after round of ammunition into the library at the seminary, religious Zionism's flagship institution. About 80 students had gathered in the library to celebrate the Hebrew month of Adar II, which begins on Friday evening.

The names of the victims of the shooting attack were released Friday morning.


They were identified as: Yohai Lifshitz, 18, from Jerusalem; Yonatan Yitzhak Eldar, 16, from Shilo; Yonadav Haim Hirschfeld, 19, from Kohav Hashahar, Neria Cohen, 15, also from the capital, Segev Peniel Avihail, 15, from Neve Daniel, Avraham David Moses, 16, from Efrat, Roee Roth, 18, from Elkana and Doron Meherete, 26, from Ashdod.


The funerals of all eight fatalities are due to take place at 10 a.m. Friday.

I was watching the BBC with a friend when we heard "shooting" and "Jerusalem". These two words seem oddly out of place, I thought (or rather hoped) Jerusalem was considered too holy for this...I guess nothing's too holy for Hamas, as long as there's "death" and "Jews" in it.


For instance, taken from today's paper (I know it's in Spanish, I just wanted to give proof that I wasn't making anything up):

My sister had been in Jerusalem the day before. My parents sent out messages to every relative we've got to see if everyone was ok. We were lucky, but those kids? They're calling this the bloodiest attack in Jerusalem since 2004.
And today I read an article on two Uruguayan doctors that are working at a hospital in Ashkelon, Hamas' favourite bomb target. They treat israelies and palestinians alike, 'cause the Gaza strip can't give their people (wounded by their own bombs, how ironic) proper medical care.
One said how his soldier son saw a bomber who was throwing granades with one hand while holding a baby in the other. They just had to stand there and watch him kill, they couldn't do anything while he was using the baby as a shield.
They have seen children carrying rockets, instead of the traditional (and less twisted) cars.

Meanwhile, Olmert said that despite the attack, he will still continue the peace negotiations with Mahmoud Abas, Palestine's "president". He's a fucking puppet, there's a civil war going on in his country and he's not even lifting a finger. As long as he doesn't shoot Hamas and his people in the head, this will go on forever. Oh, and apparently he "condemned the attack". How useful.

It's a difficult situation because there's no real right and wrong side. It's action and re-action, and the saddest thing is that, for the most part, the Isrealis and Palestines are genetically closely related. It seems such a waste of life to spend it killing your family (and that goes for both sides).

The baby shield thing, as disgusting as it is, seems born out of powerlessness. Palestine don't really have the power to set up a wall/fence type of arrangement, or march an army of tanks, so they use whatever they can think of. It's terribly sad.

Unless people realise that neither side is solely to blame, I'm afraid this is going to carry on for a long, long time. The Israeli government call it military operations, Palestine doesn't have such luxury, and resorts to guerilla-style warfare. Doesn't matter how you do it or what you call it, it's still war.

well, the English and Irish, genetically share the same origins, yet the two groups have had a longer lasting violent dispute than those between the Israelis and Palestineans.
