I don't see how it doesn't matter.

It's a case of "Let's be adults here and own up to our mistakes." You are now pondering over whether to leave Iraq or not, when really, it's your own fucking fault for being so damn greedy. Pretty much. And it would flatter you as a country if you could at least admit to that.

So I'd say it really does matter. Perhaps it doesn't change the situation, but it would be a little less patronising to the rest of the world, for starters.
