Transparent Desktop
On my fifteenth attempt I was finally ninja enough to find the hidden "Transparent Desktop" option in Windows XP. Give it a go yourselves.

how many failed attempts at a picture that lined up about right did it take?

About four shots.
The actual alignment is really done in the second photograph, then you can move the camera quite easily to match up the background. These Guys are a shit-load better at it than me. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you need a digital camera, and you have to take a pic of what's behind your screen, and arrange the moniter in the same position?
I thought their was actually something in the back of the LCD screen that made a background from what was behind the screen. Didnt' think this was that easy...
