I can very well picture that part being boring on the screen - it is interesting enough in the book, but only because there is a lot of internal stuff going on. In addition, McEwan really gets into the description of the horror these guys encounter, whereas in the movie, one image would be sufficient. If the segment is as long as it was in the book, proportionally, it might be a bit too much.
