New Front Page
What happened? I thought I was somewhere else...
If it isn't a mistake, it's gorgeous, but tiny.
I miss the latest news, but there hadn't been any for awhile so the static front page with the latest pretty pictures will tell me if there is anything new, mostly.
If it is somebody hijacking the front page, I don't know what to say. It's a little hard to figure out how to get here from there, but that shouldn't slow any of the regulars down.
How do we get it to change the "Featured Articles" away from Featured Articles: Flat-chest a turn-off | Shockingly Thin | Belittled Breasts | (more...) ? Why should that garbage be "Featured"? She's a sweetie, and her breasts are just fine. Is that a British thing that an old man like me wouldn't understand?
OK, you must be testing. Sorry. You've got two too many photos on the "Most Popular" and "Recent" pages, but you probably already knew that. It really is looking beautiful, but that might just be my reaction to the beautiful photo you are using as the Merry Christmas photo.
and you might want to change "All About Keira Knightley Galleries Keira Knightley Galleries in One Site!" to have fewer "Keira Knightly Galleries". I think that might be a Google Ad and you won't be able to fix it. Sorry about bringing it up. Yep. That's an Adsense error, nothing you can do except complain about it.
You are a Web Design God! I wish I knew how to make the pictures available as the front page on my website ( http://lucycrew.com ) because the pictures are really the only thing important there.
Well, my curiosity got the better of me so I looked at the source code. It looks like a lot of the front page is hard coded. Do you have something that generates the front page from the databases (articles & pictures)? Is it something that ordinary mortals could afford?
thanks for the feedback on the new website.
I've been testing the new layout for a couple of weeks now, slowly tweaking and adding and refining bits here and there.
You're right that it's tiny, and that is part of the way KKW is going forwards. It had become obvious that as interests wane over time and our regular staff and administrators have moved on that we could no longer maintain the site in a way deserving to the visitors. Rather than let the old site stagnate, I decided to perform one last redesign that shifted the focus to what we already have here, instead of news updates. A sort of 'KKW Lite' was in mind - something compact and efficient and low-maintenance.
There are no guarantees of updates or any regular schedule of additions; just the promise that KKW will always be online in it's present form that preserves the 9 years of the site's history.
The featured articles are the only three that have been imported from the old website so far, more will follow shortly. However those three were historically the most read and so provide the highest Adsense revenue on the article pages so they might stick around.
The other single-line adsense units will probably be removed soon since they don't perform as expected.
I'm aware of the 'extra two photos' on the Most Popular and Most Recent tabs, although I had only encountered it on some versions of Safari - Firefox and Internet Explorer render the page as intended - Safari gets it wrong for no reason I can figure out yet; it's a work in progress.
The widget that displays pictures on the frontpage developed from a side project of mine that i've been working on for about a year in 30-minute bursts. The actual technical bit of getting images from a coppermine database is done by a plugin called cpmfetch, and that's something you can download for free and play with. The interface is custom, though.
The whole site is really in open testing, so expect some things to work, others to break and general tweaks over the coming weeks.
Then I have a tiny (who the hell knows) suggestion. See http://www.kevo.com/profile/keiraknightley pay particular attention to "News and Web Feeds" and the "Add a Feed" section. The feeds I've put out there have kept Keira in the top 10 for the last couple of years. Now sometimes the articles aren't too relevant, because they merely mention Keira's name and really are about someone else, but that's no biggie. Just look over the source and see how much is involved. (God I love that "view source" button.) This would probably be appropriate for the second (or "News") page. No sense in messing up that beautiful front page, but no sense in actually having to administer a "News" page, either. The "News" page could have an administered section and an RSS grabber too.
Also see my other favorite lady (actually, I have thousands of favorite ladies, but that's because "I'm Going Straight To Hell"...) That would be "Nazanin", Nazanin Afshin-Jam Note that the RSS feeds include Nazanin's MySpace blog so whenever she makes a blog entry, this page picks it up. Now, dyslexic Keira might not start blogging tomorrow, but the capability would be awesome. In other words, this code stumblingly does the thing you are eliminating on the frontpage because nobody was doing it. (And I will give you "stumblingly," but look again at the kevo page. As I type this there are five stories, and the oldest one is nine hours old. Actually, if you hit the "more" button there are a hundred and the oldest is November 11th, a month and a half ago.)
Interesting, that seems to be one of the default formats for "Bing," the new Microsoft search engine. Check Keira Knightley on Bing and then go to "News".
And I switched to Coppermine for the pictures as soon as I understood what was going on because Coppermine is "Open Source" AND Coppermine plays movies. And with balloon flights, you need movies. I'll chase down that cpmfetch, thanks.
