Wimbledon '08

I thought I'd start this thread while my favourite player is still in the tournament (Ivanovic :p (Anyone else think she's bloody gorgeous?)).
I'm not much of a tennis fanatic because I'm pretty shite at the sport but I do enjoy watching Wimbledon.
Murray thrashing his opponent yesterday was brilliant and I do like watching the girls too. Quite confusing with all these new eastern europeans/russians coming in though. :|

:D I agree with you! Ivanovic is really nice!! But my favourite players are Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer:$. I'm looking forward to their match this Monday! It will be an awesome match!! :D
Who do you think will win Wimbly '08?:D

Joly 29-06-2008 09:29 AM

I think it'll be between Nadal and Federer again for the men.
Not sure about the women though. I like Jankovic, I'd rather her than the Williams sisters.

This may sound odd from a man who will happily watch 5 days of a test match without moving from the couch, but tennis = yawn.

McEnroe v. Borg? Hell yes I'd watch.
Now... not so much.

I saw Murray against Haas the other day, which was quite a good match, mostly because both of them were actually trying to come to the net a bit. Haven't seen much else. I lost interest now that Wimbledon has become a place for baseline bashing too. I can't stand Nadal, so I'm hoping he doesn't win.

I just looked at the Wimbledon website, and Safin is still in! And he's doing well! I kind of hope he'll give Nadal the trashing of his life. Provided he's fit, he's well able. He's got the strength that Nadal has, possible more of it, and he's a clever player. It'd be nice for him to actually win something again, instead of being plagued by injury (*touches wood*).

Also, as un-feminist as this may be, I hate women's tennis. It is even more boring than the men's matches. Pretty much, whoever looks like they drank the most steroids for breakfast is going to win. It's got very little to do with technique anymore.

Wow, Murray comes back from 2 sets down to win the game. Great match!
I find it hard to imagine a Brit not enjoying that game.
Shame Nadal will probably beat him in the quarters :(

Leonie 30-06-2008 09:15 PM

I dont know, I reckon Murray has a slight chance, perhaps a better chance than others might have. He's creative, and he likes coming to the net, and with a bit of luck, that's going to upset Nadal's hard-hitting strategy. Nadal is quick, but in the Haas game, Murray managed to get to some incredible passing shots and put them behind Haas, to everyone's surprise, so he might just be cut out to give Nadal a fright, if not a loss.

Joly 30-06-2008 09:17 PM

But looking at the record, Nadal's beaten Murray 3 times from 3 games.
But you may be right. Except Murray's not always at his best. He'll need to be consistent throughout the match.

Leonie 30-06-2008 09:20 PM

If he plays like he did Haas, he's got a shot. He has just finished a five-setter though, which isn't ideal.

That said, he won after losing a set to Haas, he came back from two sets down this last game... It might show him that he can get back on top after getting a beating, and that's knowledge he'll need against Nadal.

From what I gathered from commentary, Murray has changed quite a bit. He's in control more. Compare it to Safin: when he's in control, he's nigh on unbeatable, when he lets people get to him, he helps them beat him. If Murray can keep a clear head, who knows what he can come up with. Tennis has seen crazier things happen.

Nadal will crush Murray, Federer - Nadal Final with Federer winning. (Boring)

The womens side is wide open with Jankovic adding to the list of top seeds departing, which Williams will win it this year is the question me thinks.

Leonie 30-06-2008 10:52 PM

I know :(

But I hate Nadal. When's the match on anyway, might watch?

apoggy 30-06-2008 10:55 PM

no idea, i work a 12-8 shift so haven't watched much tennis this time round, watched the latter stages of the Murray match when I got home earlier.

Joly 05-07-2008 06:41 PM

So... Unsurprisingly, Nadal crushed Murray to set up another Federer/Nadal final; the Williams sisters screamed and grunted their way to the women's final (Venus won) and Jamie Murray (the other brit) was knocked out in the doubles.

But... Laura Robson the 14 year old has won the junior singles final beating a 17 year old in the semis and a 16 year old in the final giving her a potential wild card entry for next years Wimbledon. And here's the best bit, she's British :D
I really enjoyed watching her play actually and given that she has so many years ahead of her to improve I seriously think we have a potentially world class women's tennis player.

Anduril 09-07-2008 02:05 PM

Stupid ending of the wimbly final :'( But well.. both nadal and federer played awesome! Except the first and second set for federer.. pity he lost! So sad to see him losing..:'( Hope he will win US Open! I think it will be hard (against Nadal and Djokovic) though.. What did you think about the men's final?!
