I took these earlier today at the small ancient cemetery we have here in my middle of the country. For such a grim place, it's really very beautiful.

I don't know much about composition and whatnot since I've never taken any photography classes so hopefully I can get some decent comments.

Whoa - you've really managed to capture the atmosphere with your photos.

My mind goes "In every generation, there is a slayer..." when I see them.

I have no formal training either, so I'll shut up now.

I hope you don't mind me commenting like this, but it's a visual medium and I think it would be easier than scrolling up and down to see what I'm talking about.

Compositionally, I like this one...except for the horizon. It is about halfway up the frame, and that is a little bit jarring from a compositional standpoint. A useful rule to remember is the rule of thirds. Basically, you divide the frame into thirds vertically and horizontally. Your focal point should fall on one of these lines.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y216/Alynndan/gy2.jpg
This photo works well along the lines of the rule of thirds. The perspective is a bit pedestrian though. Combine the angle of the road in the first one with the horizon on the third with this one and you've got a stunner.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y216/Alynndan/gy3.jpg
Get closer. A wide angle of tombstones works better in Arlington National Cemetary because of the numbers. Here, I'd rather see the texture of the tombstones.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y216/Alynndan/gy4.jpg
Now that I've told you to get closer...back up. :p Just a smidge. I'd like to see a little more sky. Also, play around with fill flash to shed a little more light on the subject. It will help bring out some of the details.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y216/Alynndan/gy5.jpg
On this one, I'd say frame it so there's some negative space on the left side. Compositionally, this feels a bit heavy.

Overall, an excellent sampling. One other thing, look into some filters if you want to keep shooting black and white (which you should, because contrary to what mongoose says :p ...black and white is beautiful) such as red and green. A red filter helps deepen your sky and make the clouds pop. Green is really good for bringing out textures, particularly in male portraiture.
In lieu of fill flash, try carrying a piece of white poster board and prop it so it bounces a little light onto the subject. This will open up some of the details a bit.

Woooo Brad ftw! Thanks for the pointers. I really had no idea about the thirds thing. Once I get my SLR (which UPS says will be on thrusday), I'll look into filters more and such. Right now I'm just using my older crappy compact and desaturizing them in photoshop.

My mind goes "In every generation, there is a slayer..." when I see them.

Hahaha...there was actually vampires all around, but alas...you can't capture them in film. Stupid no reflection rule. BAH!

trust me mandy... when your 400d turns up... we wont hear from you for weeks.

i highly suggest getting the 65mm macro lens if you wanna do detail photography. it's a damn good lens.

What lens(es) is the 400 coming with?

I need to get out the 'blads and do some shooting. First though, I'll need to find some medium format film. I miss my Nikons. :(

Kit lens on the 400D is 18-55mm.
Which will last Mandy and I about a month.

A great friend of mine works at the digital photo studio where they sell cameras and lenses... I don't even know if I'll last a month, since she's going to let me test them.

CS2.

And if the cemetery was more colorful, I would have more color shots. Cemeteries are drab and grim. Black and white suits it.

Black and white suits everything.
It is a beautiful, abstract medium, without the utter mess that normally accompanies abstract art.

Please stop spamming - your comment seems to have little to do with the topic of this thread.

Unless you are comparing the scene of resident evil to the graveyard in the photos, in which case you still don't get what the thread is about.

Please try to promote discussion in future, post meaningful responses. Thank you! :)

Something I failed to mention earlier is that I really like the ethereal quality in the trees at the far end of the road in context with the cemetary on the right. I'd like to see this explored further. It has a real other worldly quality.

And, you have inspired (where the fuck is spire?) me to go out and purchase three rolls of 120 film (2 rolls of TMax 100 and 1 roll of TMax 400) to shoot up this weekend with Marcia.
Woot.

Yeah...a digital back for a Hasselblad 500C/M's a bit out of my range. Besides, I love the smell of film.
And chemicals.

These are mostly random shots I took earlier with my new camera. I was outside taking pictures of our old dog (which were crap because he would NOT stop moving) and I spotted this little grey cat sitting in a crack in the ground sort of hiding. It had AWESOME eyes and I'm thinking "Great this cat is never going to let me get close enough." It was sooo friendly! It came as soon as I called it and posed for me and everything:
