Teenage girls who plan to get pregnant do so to improve the quality of their lives, a report out today has found.

A study published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation shows that girls as young as 13 see motherhood as preferable to working in a low-paid, dead-end job.

Far from the common assumption that teenage pregnancies result from irresponsibility or ignorance about contraception, some young girls actively choose to have a baby as a way to change their life and to gain independence and a new identity.

The research was carried out by the Trust for the Study of Adolescence and was based on interviews with 51 young mothers and fathers aged 13 to 22 living in six deprived areas of England.

The study found that an unsettled background and bad experiences at school provided an impetus to change direction in life.

While a minority of those questioned said they regretted the decision to have a child, the vast majority said it had improved their life.

Report author Suzanne Cater said: "Highlighting the fact that not all teenage pregnancies are unplanned will help address support needs currently not being met.

Dr Lester Coleman, who managed the research project, said: "For the first time the views and experiences of young people who planned their pregnancies are being heard.

The UK's teenage pregnancy rate is the highest in Western Europe and costs the Government an estimated £63 million a year.

I always knew that was a major motivation but does anyone else think it's fucked up?

I know when I was at school girls planned on getting pregnant so that they could get a council house, hardly the best reason for a child to be brought into the world

Same at my school. one girl did that at the age of 14!!, then went on to have 3 more. We're 22 now, and she's got 4 kids just because she wanted benefits etc. apparently its all different dads too (one definitely is, mixed race)

I don't know anyone who got pregnant just to get a council house but I knew a girl who kept her unplanned pregnancy so that she could claim benefits and be entitled to a council house. It's totally fucked up to want a baby at 13 to 'improve your life' and it's unfair on tax payers who have to pay for the benefits being claimed.

And the cycle will continue when those loser kids are old enough to claim welfare.

claim welfare.

LIKE YOUR MOM!

So England is so lame that 13-year-old girls are getting pregnant to make it better for themselves there. That shit's fucked up. You wouldn't find this in America because we're all too busy eating and playing video games.

In contrast, in England, there are fewer women going into stripping, prostitution or the porn industry.

Exactly. Teenage pregnancy may not be as high there but the fact is young girls everywhere seem to be learning the lesson than sex is their best route to making enough money for a good life. That's a disturbing lesson, and I hope if I have daughters, I can teach them that their brains have as much value as their bodies.

That depends on whether they get your genes :-P

What a girl wants, what a girl needs.
A council house, is a reason to breed.

Hey, at least over half of the girls don't answer "currency prostitute" when asked what they wanted to be when they grow up like in the former Soviet Union in the late 1980s.

In contrast, in England, there are fewer women going into stripping, prostitution or the porn industry.

You say that like it's a good thing. :p

On the other hand, it is a widely known fact that there are too many old people in the UK. Regardless of class, apparently we need more babies. However, if it is the case that all the youth are on benefits, and the elderly are on benefits, the people in the middled get absolutely shafted.

Welcome to tax-paying adulthood! Your gallon jug of lubricating jelly (with the easy pump) and a bourbon soaked rag to bite down on will arrive with the next tax bill.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage."

That is VERY fucked up. I want kids, one day, and even though I'm really girly and obsess over babies, I know if I had a one right now my life would be over. I had a pregnancy scare awhile back and freaked the fuck out.
