My own thread inspired me to do this one also.

Over-rated:Instead of saying everything on mtv I will list actual musicians.
John Mayer
Liz Phair
Bright Eyes
Rooney
Incubus
Further Seems Forever-They have a strong following.....why?
Slipknot-no shit

Under-rated:
The Mars Volta-At the drive in gets all the Credit
Sparta-Same case as Mars Volta
Built to spill-Hardly anyone I have met knows who they are
Hella-Badass band....enough said
Ozma-People call them a Weezer rip off but there new stuff is as good as when Weezer early days from 1994-1997.

I could name a ton but I dont want to, I will add later maybe.

Outkast. There music sucks, so I have no idea why people like it/give them rewards.
Oh, and all the boy bands of old and new(besides Maroon 5)

Richard

Over-rated:
50 Cent
Ludacris
Method Man
(Just about every latest rapper that has come about in the last 2 years. I mean that.)
Christina Aguilera
Hilary Duff
Elvis (I'm only putting him down because I like Buddy Holly more. But I don't mean it.)

Under-rated:
Buddy Holly
Just about any 50's & 60's music. I'm not really hip to anything else.

Depends on your point of view and taste, but I think a lot of people now underrate Hanson. They were good, and talented.
Over-rated I'd say Hilary Duff. Catchy songs, but her stuff is so yesterday (sorry, I had to say that).

I'd agree with Hanson. I was young and immature back then, and I got caught up with the Hanson crowd. I actually still own "that" album.

overrated:
-Evanescense [sp?] ...theyre really not that good.
-hoobastank/incubus...pretty much the same band
-new found glory
-dashboard confessionals
-linkin park
-OUTKAST

underrated
franz ferdinand
jimmy eat world
white stripes
modest mouse

may add more later

Kyle_West

O yes dashboard. I agree. I would say Modest Mouse but that damn song is played non stop on the radio. I liked there stuff from like 7 years ago and this cd comes out and everyone loves them. I dont think they're under-rated. At least anymore. Plus they have always had a strong following. If they didn't they wouldn't have lasted. If I went by what deserved to be on tv Id have about 700 bands on the under-rated list, and about as much for over-rated. 50-cent, Hillary Duff, etc. That isn't music thats poison.

17-07-2004, 07:02 AM
To be honest, to be overrated in my opinion does not lessen my respect for them. Simply that their music is not awe-inspiring or revolutionary as those who are underrated. Indeed, I am a fan for most of the groups and singers on both lists. The idea is that most people I hear, when they refer to music, know more about the overrated groups than the underrated.

Overrated:
Avril Lavigne
Coldplay
Good Charlotte
Linkin Park
No Doubt
Simple Plan
The Strokes
The Used
The White Stripes

Underrated:
Finch
MxPx
Sublime
The Postal Service
The Smiths
Travis

Pinkfairy

I have to agree with Avril Lavigne. She is over-rated though her music is not bad.
I think the Vines are under-rated.

Pygmalion

OVER-RATED:
N.E.R.D
Outkast
Avril-I'm sorry, I don't agree Pinkfairy, her music is scheit.
Hilary Duff
Incubus/Nickelback/Linkin Park and all that pop/"rock" bands that have suddenly emerged
Jet-a description by the eloquent biys of Frenzal, "a song that is catchy and awesome the first time, and is hideously annoying the second, third, fourth times you hear it." That describes "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" PERFECTLY.

UNDER-RATED
The Pixies
Mister Jigga (SEVERELY underrated)
The Eels
Yeah DragonRat, the Smiths
Seafood
Kings Of Leon
The Mars Volta-They're fantastic live
Brian Jones Town Massacre

And like everyone else, when I think of more I'll add em.

EmotionSickness
17-07-2004, 10:12 AM
Sorry, but Incubus isn't a pop rock band that "just emerged". They've been on the scene for at least 8 years now. And it's Hoobstank that sounds like/is ripping off Incubus, not the other way around. Just had to clear that up. :)

Over-rated bands/artists:

The White Stripes
Pretty much any "emo"/"screamo"/schmemo band.
Metallica
New Found Glory
Blink-182 (I actually liked them back in the day, around the time of Cheshire Cat. But now? Please.)
Hoobastank
50 Cent
Joss Stone

I'm tired. I'll think of more later.

Kyle_West
17-07-2004, 06:47 PM
The Pixies are under-rated??? They sell out arenas for 60 bucks a ticket. At least they did in Atlanta for a show thats coming up. Sold out in less than a hour. You cant get much bigger than that. My brother tried to buy tickets to taht Atlanta show.

A couple more if I have anything to do with it. I was thinking about doing a "over-rated quotes & under-rated quotes." I just thought of it last night, but I won't post it for a while. :p

Kyle_West
17-07-2004, 10:59 PM
I started the over-rated thread on the actors. So if anything I have the right to do it. We could always do cars.

I thought over-rated cds would be the last one if someone makes it in a few days. Since it relates to this like the movie/actor ones.

Nirvana is over-rated. They are remembered this much because of Kurts leaving.....I stick to Courtney Love killing him! I saw something that a homeless guy was told she tried to pay him off to kill him. But yeah they're over rated. So is Jimi Hendrix. Primus is under-rated and Daft punk is also.

CFC
17-07-2004, 11:04 PM
So is Jimi Hendrix.

I beg to differ. Little Wing, Hey Joe, All Along the Watchtower, he put out some great stuff.

Kyle_West
17-07-2004, 11:06 PM
I never said I didn't like his stuff. I think Hey Joe was a cover wasn't it? O well anyway, he is said to be the best guitar player ever. I dont think he is, I thought Stevie Ray Vaughn was better. But yeah, he had a few good songs, Fire wasn't bad.

CFC
17-07-2004, 11:13 PM
I'm just saying I don't think he is under-rated. He was one of the best guitar players ever. Maybe not the best in some people's opinion, but I can see why people could make a case that he is.

Meh...you all make me sick...only DR's post is any good, as he likes the bands he thinks are over-rated...the rest of you have let me down...shame on you :D

Then again, I have UBER-broad musical tastes...so I like a LOT of things so I reckon this entire thread will annoy me.

I don't really think there are any over-rated or under-rated bands. Simply because the fact you dislike them does not make them over-rated (see DR's point)...it's critical acclaim that does that and to be fair, music critics are usually spot on...they're quick to diss even records that do well, and quick to boost the case for records that don't do well...

Also, unlike film awards, music awards are disregarded generally as a pile of shit. Furthermore critics and lovers of music alike differ SO radically, unlike films. As such I'm unconvinced this thread works...but meh...have fun with it.

By carefully leeching bands from other people's lists and comparing to mine, here is my list.

Overrated
The White Stripes
Avril
Maroon 5
N.E.R.D
Hilary Duff and probably Lindsay as well when she begins releasing junk

Underrated
Muse (well it is for most of my friends)
Radiohead
Keane
Snow Patrol
The Vines (they deserve to get some of the popularity Jet is receiving these days)

I'd agree that Evanescence is over-rated, but on the other-hand Amy Lee is not. I'm sorry but that woman's got vocals that will slam anyone on American Idol. She impresses me a lot. Of course, if you listen to her non-stop eventually your head will bust wide open, but that's not the point.

It's interesting seeing the Beastie Boys on your list. Not because I think they are over/under-rated, but because I was in high school when they hit with Licensed to Ill, and my best friend called it "silly white boy rap". He's black, and was into all of the Wrecks in Effect and the other R&B/Rap crossover BS of the time.
The Beastie Boys go on to drop Paul's Boutique, which gets listed on VH1's top 100 albums ever. Wrecks in Effect winds up on VH1's 50 worst songs.
I never got to see Nirvana live, but a couple of friends of mine who played in bands did, and they said they were awful live. I'm of the opinion that any band that can't pass muster live, is overrated.
A lot of old school rap artists are underrated, in my opinion, because of the influx of "gangsta rap". They rapped about killing lyrically...so they are perceived as soft as compared to the current crop.
*puts on kevlar helmet and goggles...straps on bullet-proof vest*
Tupac Shakur...overrated.

Over-rated: Norah Jones. Her music is fine, but I do think she is over-rated.
I don't think Radiohead and the Bestie Boys are under-rated either.
I've never heard of At the Drive-in.

Weezer is working on album 5 right now. Not sure on date of release. But Blue/pinkerton are the only good cds they have my favorite of all time actually.

At the drive-in is spectacular and Jacoby is being forced to listen right as we speak.

U2 under-rated????Last time I checked they were playing superbowl half time shows and the NBA finals. I'd hate to see what they would be doing if they were over-rated.

U2 deserves everything they have.

I can't believe people think that The Vines are underrated. They are the WORST Australian band, ever! Plus the behaviour of Craig Nicholls (lead singer) is so stereotypical and boring that it makes the whole point of being a "rock star" even more crass than it normally is.

N.E.R.D

That is impossible. N.E.R.D. maybe overrated in Europe, but in America, no one even knows who the hell they are. Everyone with half a brain knows Pharrell because of all his collaborations with the big names (Jay-Z, Snoop). A moderate amount of people know Chad Hugo from his work with Pharrell in the Neptunes.

Although those two are popular, the third guy is not. I have one of the CDs and I don't even know his name. They really don't get much coverage here on the radio in America. None of the songs from their self-titled CD made the radio here in Houston.

Here are some overrated people:
That damn Avril (as you said, Devil)
That damn Hillary (as you said, Devil)
Green Day
Smashmouth
J-Kwon
Nelly
The members of B2K

Underrated:
Taproot
Petey Pablo
Murphy Lee
D12 (without Eminem)
The Offspring

That should do it...

*Michael Jackson
*Dr Dre

Michael Jackson has the best selling album OF ALL-TIME with Thriller (I believe it just passed 50 million). That thing is the reason MJ can lock himself in his creepy mansion with thousands of kids. Plus, Bad and Off the Wall were also good albums. Michael Jackson has 14 #1 hits in the US, and more in Europe. Anything he did when he was still a black male (instead of white female) was quality stuff. At this point, he is no longer a musician, he is just a creepy guy that you hide your children from. It is a shame that he messed up his life so much.

Now, about Dr. Dre, he has put together some of the most famous rappers ever. Not only did he start NWA, the quintessential early rap group (besides Run DMC), he also started up west coast talent such as Ice Cube, Mac 10, Easy E (R.I.P.), and Snoop (who is overrated). Eminem, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Obie Trice, and Bone Thugs all owe their existence to Dr. Dre. There is no possible way this man is overrated. If anything he is underrated, because I'm sure most are hearing all of this for the first time.

The one rap mogul that is overrated is P. Diddy. He is riding the success of the Notorious BIG for all it is worth. He has yet to come up with an original beat for any of his songs. He doesn't really run the city.

Some of there stuff is a fusion, some of it is more mainstream R n B. Whatever they turn their hands to, though, they're a talented bunch. Not sure they're "over-rated", but maybe they are in Oz...over here they're rated, but I wouldn't say over-rated.

I'm crying. I think the Beatles were the best band ever and deserved all the glory that was given to them. Too bad it really fucked all of them up. Except Ringo, he's too much of a man for that. Ringo was under-rated. I think Oasis was seen to some people as a trend and they didn't get as much credit as they deserve. If only those brothers could get along.

The streets...it isn't about singing, it's about lyrical poetry and breaking genres...The Streets are avante garde.

Oasis...meh...marginally over-rated but a fucking good band...and what's wrong with wanting to be the Beatles for fuck's sake? One of the best bands of all time...emulating them is supposed to be a good goal :)

Only thing I can agree with there is pop...although...no let's not.

I personally think Funeral for a Friend are actually eally over-rated in indie circles...they're not even that good.

Franz Ferdinand and Muse, however...top choices. Hardly call either, given the hype around them at the moment, under-rated though.

Alrighty...I was replying to someone from the UK who said Muse were under-rated...I accept they're under-rated internationally, but I don't buy that they are here...they're huge.

Secondly...I can't believe I forgot them...Bush. They're a UK band from London, and yet they're bigger in the states than they are here...most people over here have never heard of them, and yet most people I've asked about them online from the states do know of them (even if they don't like them per se). Whether that's being under-rated or just a strange quirk, I'm not sure, just interesting...to broaden the scope of this discussion...anyone else think of a band that's big outside of its native country and relatively unheard of back home?

deviljet88
01-08-2004, 01:57 PM
I think The Vines aren't known much in Australia. I mean people may have heard of their name, but don't really know much about thier music. They left Sydney, Australia a few years ago which might account for them known better overseas...

And about Muse, yeah I've only heard of their song Time is Running Out on the radio. They placed Hysteria for a while as the follow-up single, but it wasn't very successful and was soon scratched off the playlist.
