This is an unproofed copy of the screenplay I submitted to a state sponsored compitition, it wasn't selected to be a finalist, why i don't know though it is a controversial topic to some.


Journey's End


Interior of a bedroom in an apartment. Queen size bed, a pile of clothes sits next to a basket filled with neatly folded clothes. A Keira Knightley poster hangs on one wall. A stereo sits on the small dresser. A nightstand sits next to the bed with a lamp, a clock, and a phone next to it. The clock shows 3 AM or so.

The bed is occupied by Angus Douglas and his girlfriend. They are asleep, their breathing slow and regular.

The phone by the bedside begins to ring. And ring. And ring. Angus ignores the phone and curls up closer to his girlfriend. The phone keeps ringing.


ANGUS’ GIRLFRIEND

ARE YOU GOING TO ANSWER THAT?

Sighing Angus rolls over and grabs hold of the phone.

ANGUS

THIS HAD BLOODY WELL BE GOOD.

VOICE ON PHONE

ANGUS? IT’S LARA......I JUST HEARD ABOUT..........
IT’S JULIA.......

Angus sits up in the bed and turns on the light next to the bed.

ANGUS

NO, SHE DIDN’T......

LARA

YEAH, HER FUNERAL WAS TWO DAYS AGO.
HER FAMILY DIDN’T WANT ME TO BE THERE.





ANGUS

WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU SIS?

LARA

I....I...I REALLY WANT TO SAY GOODBYE.
(Lara is crying on the other end of the line
her sobs inyerupt her words as she speaks)

ANGUS

I CAN PICK YOU UP IN THE MORNING AND TAKE YOU.

Lara is silent on the other end for several long pauses.

ANGUS

YOU OK LARA?
(Faint sobs can be heard)

LARA(Sobbing)

NO I’M NOT OK! SHE’S GONE DAMNIT!
HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL! CHRIST!

ANGUS(Sighs softly)

I’M COMING OVERE RIGHT NOW.

LARA

NO...YOU DON’T NEED TO...
I WON’T DO ANYTHING STUPID.
I’LL BE OK.

ANGUS

DON’T GIVE ME THAT.

LARA

I’LL BE OK, REALLY.
JUST MEET ME IN THE MONING TO DRIVE
ME TO THE CEMETARY.

Lara hangs up on Angus. Angus sighs and slowly
hangs up the phone. His girlfriend looks at
him curiously.

ANGUS’ GIRLFRIEND

EVERYTHING OK?

ANGUS

NO, IT’S NOT.

Angus reach’s over and turns out the light and
wraps his arms about his girlfriend and they
drift off to sleep.

Interior Lara’s home.

Lara Douglas is fully dressed, it is obvious
that she has not been sleeping and that
she has been crying. Lara is Angus’ step-sister and
they do not resemble each other. Lara is of mixed race
and is an attractive young woman. She is holding a
hankie in her hands, twisting it with her fingers.

exterior

Angus pulls up to the home his car fairly new,
nothing fancy, i.e. Toyota Corolla.
Angus steps from his car. He is dressed casually,
dark polo shirt and a plain solid color kilt,
thick wool socks rolled down to the
tops of his black boots.

Lara opens the door and wraps her arms about
Angus hugging him.

LARA(whispering)

THANKS BRO.

ANGUS

YOU READY?


LARA

I THINK SO.

The next three scenes will be intercut with shots of the car
traveling, a way to get shots of New Mexico scenery.

All three scenes deal with Lara’s and Julia’s relationship.
There isn’t any dialouge, all the emotions come from
the actor’s performance.

SHORT SCENE 1

A very shy Lara gazes with longing at Julia from
afar. Julia is smiling and happy, obviouslyenjoying herself
and the conversation of those around her.
Sighing Lara turns away and slumps off despondant.
She does not see Julia watching her walk away.

SHORT SCENE 2

Lara and Julia are walking, holding hands. It is night, they
are laughing and smiling, obviously having a good
time. It begins to rain, pouring down rain, hard.
Lara and Julia are soaked. Together they run for shelter.
Standing together they gaze into each others
eyes, before they passionately kiss.

SHORT SCENE 3

Lara is in tears. Julia is being held by her mother
who looks upset and very distrought. Julia’s father
is angry, full of rage, his eyes wild as he jabs
his finger menacingly at Lara as he shouts at her.

With a sharp gesture Julia’s father indicates that Lara
must leave. Slowly with head bowed, tears running down her cheeks,
she turns away and walks out the door. She doesn’t see Julia
crying, shove her mother and rush out of the room.

The cemetetary

Angus and Lara are walking among the graves, Lara clinging
to Angus for support. They approach Julia’s grave.


Angus stops and Lara continues walking slowly
until she is in front of Julia’s tombstone. Lara’s
cheeks are streaked with tears as she sinks to
her knee’s.

LARA

I’M SORRY I WASN’T THERE FOR YOU LOVE.
I NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU.
I WROTE YOU LETTERS EVEN TOUGH YOU
PROBABLY NEVER GOT THEM.

YOUR PARENTS WROTE ME ONCE SAYING THAT
YOU WERE FREE OF ME AND THAT YOU HAD MOVED ON.

Lara sobs and wipes the tears from her face.

LARA

I COULDN’T STOP LOVING YOU IF I TRIED.
EVEN AFTER ALL THE YEARS THAT WENT
BY, I NEVER GAVE UP, ALWAYS HOPING
FOR A LETTER, OR A PHONE CALL.

LARA

I EVEN DARED DREAM OF ONE DAY OPENING MY
FRONT DOOR TO SEE YOU STANDING THERE
SMILING.

Lara lowers her head and breaks out into uncontrollable
sobs, her hair covering her face.

LARA(whispering)

I LOVE YOU JULIA.
I ALWAYS WILL.

Lara slowly stands and walks back to Angus who
had been waiting anxiously, his face full of concern.
he wraps his arms around Lara hugging her, not
letting go.

That's not proper screenplay format. That's probably why it didn't make it to the finalists.
