That 40mm f2.8 is totally hot. Add that to the smallest digital SLR on the market and you have the entirity of Cliff's christmas wish list. Scrap Christmas, put that on the 'must have now, not later, NOW' list.

Post photos of cameras, photos taken with cameras, and generally geekout. This will probably end up with just me and Hasslebrad being totally shunned by the rest of the community. Ah well.

what's the megapixel amount with one of those babies?

acliff
17-08-2005, 12:47 PM
6 megapixels. I know they go up to 12 and 16 nowadays at some ridiculous price, but for me I think 6megapixels should be enough. Especially considering digital SLR 6 megapixels is several magnitudes better than a digital compact 6 megapixel.

I see a manual focus switch...so it's alright by me. :p
Have they retained the K-Mount?
I may dig my cameras out and go shoot something this weekend.

acliff
17-08-2005, 01:13 PM
Oh yes indeed. It will accept all K mount lenses, full functionality with A lenses, anything before it works as a step down lens. e.g. you set the aperture, then press the auto exposure, which activates depth of preview, metres and you can go from there.
A lenses will work in all modes.

6 megs of pixels is just fine by me. I have a Cannon PowerShot A60, and that's only 2 megapixels. Nice camera to start out with, but I really need to upgrade.

This is the only picture I can find of my faithful little camera. It was ubercheap, but it's uberbrilliant too, so that doesn't really matter then.

I know it's mini. This is just to give you a slight impression of what my camera looks like. 5.18 megapixels, will do me juuuust fine.

Without going into too much detail because most of you probably wouldn't be interested, a 6 megapixel Digital SLR CCD (the image recording bit) about 4 times larger than a 6 megapixel compact digicam CCD. Therefore it sees alot more light, and all in all can give you a much much MUCH better picture.
Which is why I want one.
Of course for parties, and portable use, I'd get a teeny camera where quality wasn't so much of an issue. like:

or

http://productimages.sony-europe.com/DSC-T7S_STYLED_IM.jpg

I wish dearly that I had a Digital SLR now. I'm at work, and London is smogged out. It looks amazing.

Zeiss glass on the Sony FTW.

acliff
17-08-2005, 04:39 PM
Zeiss glass is nice albeit teeny teeny. Zeiss Vario Tessar is the one dedicated to the minute cameras. Vario Sonnar is better, but theres a big big jump in size.
The pentax SMC glass is pretty much world class also. Except that pic i posted is waterproof.

Hasslebrad, I want your N90 and your lenses. I'm going to come round and steal em sometime in the near future.
(*thinks* 'or i could save the airfare, steal 2 grand or so and buy them myself :O')

You sure you wouldn't rather steal my 500 C/Ms (2), 50, 80 and 150mm T*s and three A12 backs? At this point, I'm more willing to part with them. ;)
Of course, then I'd have to change my username. :err:
I've also got a Nikon F3-HP with an MD4, a 28 f/2.8 and a 180 f/2.8. I used to have the 85 f/1.4 but I sold it. It would get darker around me when I opened that light sucker up.

I couldn't steal any medium/large format cameras from anyone, too much respect. I'd snatch your F3 in an instant though. Wonderful cameras they are. Perhaps a bit too bulky for my hands... in comparison the MX is a malnourished midget of a camera. build quality is comparable though.

I used to have a Calumet 4x5 too. Sold it for crack.
Actually, I traded it back in when the N90s came in.
I guy I knew in Atlanta had an incredible Sinar outfit. He got it used through the store when he worked there. Paid about $3,000 for like new equipment that was worth nearly $20,000. He did a lot of architectural work, so it was a really good investment, whereas mine was just a hole to pour money into.
We got a lot of used equipment traded in, so it was like a cornucopia for employees. The boss was really cool about it too. All of my equipment was bought through trade-ins. Photogenic Powerlights, Metz 60CT-1 flash, etc.

You see, thats why when I go back to university this year, I want to work in a camera store. Hopefully the discounts will be insane and i'll be able to afford digital camera gear very soon. Trade price 80-200mm 2.8? mmm yes please. If Sony and Konica ever get round to making their joint SLRs and lenses, I can blag sony centre discount, which would be almost as good.

Hooray. I wanted to ask this question in the photo thread but didn't want to derail it.

I've got this camera.

http://www.nzshop2go.com/images/pg-dc-sony-cybershot-dsc-p100_f.jpg

And I love it. I really really really do. But it's broken. When I turn it off, the lens won't retract, and when I turn it on, it just says to "turn power off and on again." Which...is useless.

So, basically...does anyone know of this happening to anyone else? I've heard that it did to one person I know but...whatever. I'm sending it to Sony for repairs as soon as I can copy my receipt, but I'd like to know if this is a common problem. If it is, I might just want to upgrade to another camera.

Otherwise, it's seriously fantastic, and I couldn't love it more. Which makes it that much worse when I can't use it.

What better place than here to ask a sony salesman (aka me).
I'm surprised you didn't ask me sooner, your p10 with the lens stick problem has various causes.

1) The lens assembly has been knocked to one side and will no longer rotate, hence stopping it from retracting in. To cause this lens barrel misalignment,it may have been knocked while in use, e.g. a drop. If it has been knocked, I can say almost certainly that your warranty wouldn't cover it, and hope you have insurance.
When you try and turn the camera off, does it look as if its making an effort to retract in, and makes a repeated whirring noise?

2) There is something that has found its way into the cracks between the components of the lens barrel. e.g. sand, staple, fluff, food, anything. If this is the case, then the lens may make a slight grinding noise. If you send this away to be repaired, then hopefully they'll be able to clear the obstruction, and return it to you fixed, even though its essentially 'customer damage'.
If theres a lot of sand, they man return it as a non guarantee repair.

3) Lens motor has gone. In which case it should be fully covered under guarantee.

I can't think of any other reasons at the moment, but its definitely worth sending off. It is a fairly common problem, but out of the 30-40 non retracting lens problems I've seen in various sony cameras, most of them are customer damage. Check the lens barrel. The barrels should be perfectly in line. If not, you're screwed. It is almost impossible for the lens to come out of alignment by itself. However it is pretty easy to knock it sharply from one side (even a light knock).

If it is deemed unfixable, and you choose to upgrade, maybe consider one of the T series cameras with their non moving zoom lens arrangement. They're dinky and gorgeous looking to boot.

Basically listen to what noises your camera makes when you start it up and turn it off. Also look carefully at the extended lens and see whether its out of line. If so, if you feel brave *lightly* put pressure in the relevant direction to see if it will just pop back into place. Otherwise send it off. If it is a chargeable repair, you can of course choose not to take it.

Basically, it's the first thing. But I don't know how I could have damaged it. I'm honestly almost obsessively careful about it. Almost from the minute I got it I kept it in a big padded Cyber-shot case...that I paid extra for. I've never hit it against anything, even lightly. I know it was hugely expensive and have been almost too careful with it. Also, I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but it actually happened once before and then after a few days fixed itself. That hasn't happened this time though, it's been like this since...the end of May. All of the gears look like they're aligned, but I really don't have any surefire way to tell. There doesn't look like there's any damage to the camera itself. There is a whirring noise when it tries to retract, and it goes in a little bit and then goes back out.

I'd be more inclined to think it was a mechanical damage issue if it hadn't happened once already before. The whole thing is just weird, but I'm sending it off to Sony tomorrow, so...fingers crossed.

My current plan is to get a small compact camera + a new DSLR.
If I go for the pentax waterproof and the pentax SLR, I get to use SD cards in both... and pentax lenses are the best anyhow.

The 20d is only $1300?!?

Now where would I get the money....

Well I go into all the camera shops in my local town, and none of them know a fucking thing. The quality of staff in retail stores are fucking terrible. No wonder they can't sell anything.

Meanwhile, I think I'm going to wait a while before I get my digital SLR, have about 700-1000 quid saved up ready for the next best thing.

Ooh Leica...ooh Contax.
***drools***
I've never shot with a Leica. I held one, but we never had any used Leica equipment because Bill (the owner) wouldn't pay for it. He would tell people, flat out, that they'd get twice what he was offering at the downtown Atlanta camera shops. An old fella I worked with had some Leica gear though.

The contax digital camera I want soooo badly. However, it is impossible to find them as contax has gone bust. :/ And Leica I can't afford.

i was watching eurotrip and the guy that makes out with his sister had one and got a blow job over it...so i was thinking about picking one up so when i have nothing better to do i'll go walk around with the camera and get some bjs

acliff

Well m7s cost about 2000 quid without lens.
One of the most beautifully made and designed cameras in history.

Its not that ergonomic, its not got all the fancy electronic whiz, but its just a work of mechanical art. Like a Jaguar E type. Or a classic omega automatic watch.

Although the leica MP is even better looking...
