Sweet!
As if the French could be anything but owned!

lovely, any idea how much it costs to host the games?

Nowhere near as much as London, and Great Britain in general, stand to rake in. Commie! ;)

Well...not strictly true. 95% of hosts make a substantial loss from hosting the games. Because hosting the games is like a giant pissing contest (our stadium is bigger than your stadium) hosts go all out, no expense spared, and it requires some sort of miracle to make a profit. The pound will only work against the games - Nobody wants to change their currency and get half the amount back.

Still...Paris didn't get it :D

I heard that holding the Olympics in Austrailia decreased tourism there or something. And they said Obesity rose there after the Olympics... what the hell was that about?

Why is everyone against the French?

I'm glad that London got it because when I was there, Olympic stuff was *everywhere*...they seemed really into it, so good for them.

On the internet it said all the French were disappointed but all the ones I have talked to (outside of Paris) are thrilled that Paris didn't get it because then they would have to pay for it. And they think France has enough tourism to begin with.

The fiscal loss for the municipalities that host events is usually offset by the influx of cash into the economy, though. London may lose money due to sprucing up, but the businesses that stay packed throughout the two-plus weeks of festivities might make more than they will in the following two months.
Terrorism concerns, notwithstanding, London's (as well as England's) tourist based economy stands to get a nice shot in the arm.

And...Paris didn't get it. :D (sorry Kels...I just couldn't resist)

Wooooo yay, finally an olympics that I can actually go to!

English people, when it comes to competition with the French, always hate them. Nothing wrong with that, they thoroughly deserve it.

I remember when Houston was in the running to get the 2012 games...

I think we were 3rd out of US cities when it was all said and done.

We have 2 huge stadiums next to one another (Astrodome, Reliant Center)that can be used for pretty much anything, we have a brand new basketball arena, multiple universities in the city (so there would be no shortage of venues), and natural lakes in close proximity to the city...

I think its the traffic that drove them away...very slowly at that.

It came down to London, Paris, or Rochester, NY... The bigger man won, I suppose. Apparentely our high school stadium couldn't "handle" the Olympics. Bull shit.

...? huh

actually i think we are one of the only ones to actually do well after the olympics, we are using the stadiums which not many other countries seem to do and until sept 11, we were getting record no. of tourists coming here, they are starting to rise again now luckily

but the 2000 olympics were seen by most aussies as a success

anyway, congrats London, suck dog balls France, thats what happens when you let the nazis practically walk in :D

Funny...but when I saw Jake's post, I thought "what does out former Attorney General have to do with France or the London Olympics?"
Not just another page, but rather a completely different book.

You're a real quick thinker Brad. I miss the Reno, she was good for a laugh.. but yes, back to the topic.

I was actually talking about the former Attorney General.

Right, right. France is a pretty cool country. If they weren't cool, Johnny Depp wouldn't live there.

I just needed to say how proud I am of my home city. We put on a hell of a Live8 show, we got an Olympic Games and we are weathering the storm of today's attacks. I think my thread title is even more apt now than it was when I posted. Fucked up week.
