While reading the celeb news on imdb.com I ran across this little ditty. There was no place to put it, so I thought why not start a "The Jacket" thread.

"Knightley's Nightmare Audition

British actress Keira Knightley had a nightmare experience auditioning for her upcoming movie The Jacket - she had to stop herself from vomiting on director John Maybury. The 19-year-old Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl star - who appears as an alcoholic waitress alongside Adrien Brody in the film - was unwell when she arrived for the audition with Maybury. She says, "That was an awful audition process because I was actually filming King Arthur in Ireland when I had to go to London and meet the director for this and I got food-poisoning really, really badly. It was 4.30 in the morning and I wake up and I'm puking and I had to get on a plane and it's just the most awful flight. So I went and met this director, John Maybury, and the whole time I was kind of thinking, 'Okay, don't puke over him, don't puke over him! Please!' And it was a lunch meeting, so they had fish as well, which is never good. So I'm thinking that all the time and then he suddenly turns around to me and says, 'Actually, I don't want you in this film. I think you're completely wrong for the role.' I was thinking, 'My God! And I've tried not to puke over you the entire time!'" Knightley was relieved to later learn her efforts were not in vain - Maybury changed his mind and gave her the role."

Half way interesting story I suppose. If the director would have said no to me while I was trying not to puke I just woulda let go and puked on him then. ;)
Sounds like a good movie though, Adrien Brody is great.

i also saw that on imdb. keira originally said that when she was on David Letterman a few nights ago. for some reason, Letterman seemed more interested in asking her about the jacket than king arthur.

Yeah, Letterman seemed intrigued with the name, "The Jacket." I wonder if he's seen King Arthur?

I doubt Letterman saw KA or he cares. I have been a fan of Dave for a decade now. He doesn't know any of the stars. Unlike Leno he doesn't usually get the huge celebrities. He doesn't need them. So when a new person comes on half the time he doesn't know who they are. He didn't know who Ryan Seacrest was. (If thats how you spell his name) But yeah, Letterman finds whatever he can make fun of and runs with it usually. I missed the interview on there so I'm not sure what he did.

Dunno what alcoholics you've seen but she doesn't look like one to me...she's not an old man with a beard and scruffy clothes sleeping on the pavement :D.

Jokes aside, what does an alcoholic look like then? That's like saying someone "looks" gay...sheesh. It's quite offensive I'll have you know.

Kelsey

Yeah, she does look like she drinks...she has a tired, given-up look to her. But maybe that's just this particular picture.

I'm *so* not excited for this movie. The thought of George Clooney and Soderberg (however you spell it) teaming up [on the creative end] yet again makes me cringe.

A 19 year old alcoholic, with an age old, tired old given up look in their eyes?
*waves hand*
Joking aside, you cannot judge whether someone is an alcoholic unless there is solid evidence, besides to me, she just looks tired. Proof such as a picture of yours truly, with a traffic cone on his head, cuddling a bottle of white lightning...

Movie sounds preety good, I'm a sucker for Keira, and Adrian Brody is in it(never seen any of his movies, but I found it funny when he kissed Halle Berry on the oscars 2 yrs. age) I do find his Diet Coke commercial here in the states quite funny :D hopefully it will be a good thinking man's film. oh, to put my $5 in, I also read the imdb.com interview/story. quite humerous. oh,and Keira dosen't look like an alcoholic, just tired, w/ a lot of crap on her mind.

Definetly more excited about The Jacket than I am about Pride and Prejudice (bleh). A pyscological thriller sounds pretty cool, and I'm glad to see Keira take on such a diversity of roles.

M'kay. Just got done reading the interview in Cosmo magazine (I'll post it shortly in the Articles thread) and, according to Keira, she has filmed yet another nude scene for The Jacket. I also read, from some people who have already seen some early screenings of the film, that it's not that explicit; just a "nipple shot", or something to that effect (can't remember exactly how they put it).

I wonder if it will end up on the cutting room floor. Part of me hopes so, simply because Keira has enough people criticizing her for going topless twice, all before turning 18 (I just hate giving her critics more ammo).

I'm probably opening up a huge can of worms here, but what does everyone else think about this? I really don't mind, as long as the nudity isn't gratuitous (which it supposedly is not).

Hazzle
16-07-2004, 02:56 AM
Yeah, I'm with that...if it's not gratuitous...it's cool. I'm sure she knows what she's doing.

Hey, does anyone know when the Jacket is planning to be released? Has anyone heard of anything?

There was a brief mention of this Autumn/Fall but most reports say February next year. Although they're probably only getting that info from IMDb, which is not exactly saying a lot, accuracy-wise.

Apparently there are certain times of year when certain genre of films are likely to be released (I read that somewhere). Wish I could remember what I read :-)

Uh oh. The lone duck. I honestly am not sure about this film. I have a feeling that this film's not going to do well at the box office or with the critics. The plot's raised a few eyebrows and audiences are quickly getting sick of thrillers that have a "surprise twist".

Hollywood has a bad habit of writing drunks as slighty one-note. They generally look like crap, hold a bottle/glass filled with amber liquid in their hand, sawy from side to side and slur their words a bit. There's usually one angry outburst but the scripts never go much deeper than that. This movie may provide Keira with the chance to show she's more than just a pretty face but there's may not be enough meat on the role for her to give a really good performance. Not to mention the accent she has to pull off.

I also have a feeling that the strength of Keira's performace in this film may have an effect on how harshly she's judged in P&P. It's sad too because I definitely feel that Keira has much more talent than she's shown.

Don't know if this has been posted or not but Keira said that she wanted to the movie because she has to put on an american accent & shethought that would be a challenge & her role is to be a pretty girl sitting in a corner screaming.
Is Adrien Brody the dude outta the Pianist or seth in the O.C??? :fencing:

Hazzle

Adrien Brody is the guy from the Pianist. And yeah, I think the accent thing, the addict thing and the fact she gets to work with a great cast all had something to do with the choice.

Thank you very much :). Just watched the trailer a few times, this movie looks rather good, freakishly weird, my type of movie. Keiras voice is fine, i think shes done really well, but if you listen carefully the way she sounds out the letters in the words still makes it sound like her, it just has a different slurr to it. But then again, im neither british or american, so i cant really say if its a good impersination or not, but it seems fine to me :). This movie (so far) looks better than domino and p+p imo.

Didn't she play a drug addict in Pure? Wasn't she pimped out to Sam Neill by her mother in Dr Zhivago? Maybe he got her mixed up with hilary duff?!

Those movies aren't popular. She's the blonde from Bend it Like Beckham, and the hot one from Pirates. This is her "first" serious role.

I saw the Jacket last night and thought it was OK, but not exceptional. Adrian Brody was great as usual! I am huge fan of Keira's, and I've liked all of her previous films. However, I think this role may have been a bit much for her. Her American accent was passable, but sounded forced. She seemed to loose some range at the expense of hiding her British accent. There is a scene with her and Adrian on a sofa in which this is very apparent. She overacts and is not convincing as a severe alchoholic. I still believe she has a lot of talent and I'm looking forward to the films she does in the future.

To be honest, her acting in the scene I referred to on the couch was way below the skill level she has demonstrated in the past. I don't believe she was right for the part. I think she may be too refined to play this kind of character. The character was supposed to be a burned out alchaholic and she wasn't able to pull it off convincingly.
